In 2001 EqualityMaine secured an historic $500,000 funding increase for civil rights teams to address anti-LGBT violence and harassment in Maine schools.

The Civil Rights Team Project (CRTP), administered by the Attorney General's office, is a school-based preventative program to stop hate crimes, harassment and other forms of prejudice in Maine schools. Each civil rights team includes faculty advisors, students and a community advisor who serves as a liasion between the school and the community at large. These teams discuss peer education, civil rights and intervention strategies; they also participate in trainings, conferences and other events designed to raise awareness of bias and harassment - and to stop bullying and hate crimes. To date, more than 200 Maine schools have launched civil rights teams.
